With CBD oil now legal to use across the United States, medical studies are starting to show positive results it can be for multiple physical and emotional issues. The CBD oil effects on cancer cells are receiving widespread stories in the media, however there are much more, more common problems that people face everyday which CBD can help with.
Positive CBD Oil Effects on Mental Problems
Mental health problems are the number one reason for a visit to a GP in the western world. The most common way to treat mental health issues is with medication, however studies have shown that they have little effect on a majority of patients. CBD oil however, seems to be showing much more promising results.
Effects on Anxiety
Approximately 1.5 percent of the Americans over the age of 18 suffer from anxiety. This figure equates to roughly 3.3 million adults. Panic disorders are by far the most common form of anxiety disorder.
Studies on the effects of CBD on anxiety disorders could not be classed as conclusive. However, this is more to do with the fact that these studies are few and far between, rather than they showed negative results. Most doctors when asked, consider the anxiolytic properties of CBD to be beneficial for those who suffer anxiety disorders.
One of the most common CBD oil effects is it makes you feel calm. This calmness has a hugely positive effect on anxiety, especially those who suffer from panic attacks. CBD oil makes a patient feel subdued and relaxed, and therefore far less prone to anxiety attacks.
Effects on Depression
Depression: The number one reason in the world for a visit to the doctor. It is believed that there are 350 million people worldwide who are suffering with depression at any time.
The World Health Organization (WHO) have said that by the year 2020, depression will be the number 2 cause of premature death worldwide, only heart disease will be ahead of it.
Before we explain the benefits CBD oil has on depression, there is an important point to make. Although we are in the 21st century, depression still has a certain stigma attached to it, and because of this a large percentage of people never actually receive any treatment for depression at all. This survey found that almost two-thirds of Americans do not receive any treatment at all for depression.
Unlike antidepressants though, CBD oil is available online without a prescription. Therefore people are free to use it without going through what they perceive to be the embarrassment of visiting the doctor.
CBD oil also has the added bonus that the effects of taking it can be felt within an hour, whereas anti-depressant medication can take days or even weeks to have an effect.
In a similar way to anxiety, CBD oil benefits those with depression by giving them a calm, uplifting feeling. And also, again unlike anti-depressants, CBD oil has very few side-effects.
Effects on Schizophrenia
For decades there has been much talk about link between cannabis and schizophrenia, so one may be forgiven for wrongly assuming CBD to have a negative effect on it. CBD though, unlike the THC found in cannabis, is actually an anti-psychotic.
THC affects a part of the brain in the prefrontal cortex known as the hippocampus, which is the same region of the brain affected by schizophrenia. CBD, however, has the exact opposite effect as THC, which is why it is considered to be an anti-psychotic.
CBD used as a supplemental treatment to traditional medication for schizophrenia in early trials have been successful. It is thought that the anti-inflammatory properties of CBD also have a hand in it’s benefit as an anti-psychotic, as psychotic disorders are thought to be in part caused by brain inflammation.
Positive CBD Oil Effects on other Health Issues
Effects on Stress
Cannabinoid receptors can be found in areas of the brain known to control emotional behavior. These are the areas in the prefrontal cortex that control mood, fear, cravings, sleep patterns and stress levels.
Several trials on mice and other animals have shown that the activation of cannabinoid receptors in the brain not only reduces stress levels, but also heart rate and blood pressure levels. This is thought to therefore reduce the chance of panic attacks and bouts of anxiety as a result.
Effects on Epilepsy
There have been multiple papers published that hint the endocannabinoid system (ECS) could play a major role in the future treatment of epilepsy.
Low gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) concentrations are seen in a variety of epileptic syndromes. Low GABA levels equate to a higher chance of epileptic seizure. CBD though, minimizes the chance of seizures by increasing the amount of GABA in the brain.
GABA levels are only one way epilepsy is caused though, so more research is required to see whether or not treating epilepsy with CBD is viable.
CBD Oil as Pain Relief
If you’ve ever smoked cannabis, you’ll know how good it can be for pain relief. Millions of people all over the world already take cannabis for pain, in many cases illegally. Medicinal cannabis is already widely used across America for chronic pain, spasticity, nausea and vomiting after chemotherapy.
Hemp oil that is rich in cannabinoids act as a natural pain killer. At the current time, opioids are the number one medicine used as pain relief. Multiple studies have shown though, that CBD acts upon the same areas of the brain as an analgesic.
There is good evidence to use cannabis products or “natural” cannabis products like CBD oil for pain relief.
CBD Oil as an Anti Inflammatory
CBD oil benefits the endocannabinoid system (ECS), which is the part of the body which controls pain and inflammation, in a huge way. The ECS is controlled by chemicals in the body called endocannabinoids, which keep biological functions such as sleep, pain, appetite and the immune system in balance.
When the human body is out of balance in these areas, our endocannabinoids get to work to bring the body back into balance. CBD oil benefits the ECS because the active components mimic these endocannabinoids, therefore helping with areas such as inflammation.
There is now a weight of evidence that CBD oil acts as an anti inflammatory, and helps to reduce outbreaks of acne or arthritis. There are many more illnesses and diseases though that are thought to be caused by inflammation. These include multiple sclerosis, lupus and colitis.
The studies available on those other, more serious illnesses and the effects CBD has on them, are few and far between.
Summary of CBD Oil Benefits
As you can see from the above, the weight of evidence that CBD oil benefits a number of common illnesses and diseases is growing.
Ever since cannabis was legalized for medical use in California in 1996 there have been multiple and wide-ranging possible uses for CBD.
It is extremely important to note though, that the above is just a summary. More in-depth studies must be undertaken before any of the above observations can be categorically called “effective”.
